Establishing a beautiful and healthy lawn can be achieved by sowing new grass seed, and PROLAWN seed is a top choice for many homeowners. Here are the steps to sow PROLAWN seed and create a lush, green lawn.
Step 1: Choose the Right Grass Seed
Choosing the right type of grass seed is crucial to establishing a healthy, desirable lawn. PROLAWN offers a variety of grasses that are suitable for all areas of NZ. We even created a handy map for you to choose the right seed for your lawn and location.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Preparing the soil is an important step in ensuring successful germination and growth of grass seed. Remove any debris or rocks from the area, loosen the soil with a rake, and remove any weeds or unwanted grass. If your soil is not in a good condition it is advisable to bring in around 150mm of soil so the lawn can have the best chance of success.
Step 3: Spread the Grass Seed
Measure out the amount of seed you need for your lawn and spread the grass seed evenly over the prepared soil using a broadcast spreader or a hand-held spreader. Check the instructions for the right amount of seed per area. Avoid applying too much seed as this can lead to competition for resources or poor air movement around the seed and result in disease which will be fatal for the seed.
Step 4: Cover the Grass Seed
Once grass seed is first wet it must stay wet, one of the best ways to do this is to not leave the seed on the surface of the soil. There are a few ways to help prevent this, cover the grass seed with a thin layer of soil or peat moss to protect it from birds and other animals and keep it moist for germination. If you don’t have additional soil or moss then lightly raking in multiple directions can create furrows for the grass seed to drop into. Do not bury the seed too deeply though (more than twice the size of the seed), as this can prevent it from reaching the surface.
Step 5: Water the Lawn
There is a lot of watering involved in establishing grass seed so before commencing your watering, consider applying a high quality wetting agent like Prolawn Aquaturf G. Immediately after covering the grass seed give the lawn a good water and keep the soil moist during the germination period, which can take up to 21 days. Be sure to water the lawn multiple times during the day and do not allow the soil to dry out. Once the lawn has reached 5cm high, we recommend slowly reducing the watering schedule, moving to less frequent but deeper watering.
Step 6: Kickstart your Lawns Health
Grass seed has its own food source within the seed (endosperm) but this only lasts for a short period. That’s why it’s best to get a starter fertiliser on not long after germination. Lawn Starter fertiliser is specifically designed with new grass seed in mind.
Step 7: Maintain the Lawn
Once the grass seed has germinated, it’s important to maintain the lawn properly to promote healthy growth. Mow the lawn regularly, keeping the height at the ideal height for that grass type, and fertilise the lawn every 8-12 weeks. Water the lawn as needed, but be careful not to over-water, as this can lead to disease and fungal growth.
By following these steps and using high quality professional seed, you can establish a beautiful and healthy lawn that will enhance the beauty of your home. For more information on grass seed and lawn care contact us today.
